First settled by migrant farm workers in 1937, this small residential community 16 miles from downtown Phoenix has a friendly atmosphere and continues to embrace family values and Hispanic traditions. Founders Day is a big annual celebration in El Mirage, with a parade, fiesta, carnival and live music. A nearby attraction is the Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum, replica of a 1880s Arizona village complete with costumed guides, restored buildings, and crafts demonstrations from the era. For the outdoors enthusiasts, the 10,000-acre Lake Pleasant to the north has fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing, fishing, hiking and places to camp or park the RV. White Tanks Mountain Regional park, to the west, has hiking trails leading to ancient Indian petroglyphs and a scenic desert waterfall.
